Making it happen in Community
Martin Hey
Clinical Physiotherapy Specialist in Pain Management
Mid Yorkshire Hospital Hospitals NHS
After qualifying in 1989 from Nottingham School of Physiotherapy, Martin spent five years at Morriston Hospital, Swansea followed by two years at St James’s Hospital in Leeds before taking up a Senior I post in MSK Outpatients/GP Outreach at Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
With a series of two Trust amalgamations, Martin moved to Dewsbury to take up a full time Clinical Specialist role in Pain Management Services but stayed within the newly christened Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. In 2004, Martin completed an MSc with a strong clinical bias to his speciality and completed the Non-Medical Prescribing for AHPs course at Huddersfield University in the summer of 2007, becoming the Trust’s first AHP Non Medical Prescriber.
Martin is a member of the Physiotherapy Pain Association, The British Pain Society and the International Association for the Study of Pain. Martin’s personal interests within pain management are Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and the maximisation of the skills of Physiotherapists to serve the local needs of the population with pain related problems.
Long-term conditions management offers a massive potential for the skills of Non Medical Prescribing deployed at the centre of effective, efficient patient focussed care in an ever changing, modernising NHS.
Not a working day goes by when Martin does not use his prescribing privilege and it’s knowledge to make a prescribing decision, though this does not necessarily have to culminate in the writing of a prescription…NMP is so much more than that. Martin is also passionate about individual’s attitudes and beliefs related to medication usage and this formed the basis for his original research dissertation as part of his MSc.
Martin says that he is short, stocky, balding and nearing forty, with a great wife, two sons and an unhealthy support for Leeds United.
